Dengue cases are climbing earlier in the year than has traditionally been the case, health officials say, with the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control reporting 6,927 cases nationwide by the end of February — a marked increase over previous years for the same period.
Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and rapid urbanisation are extending mosquito survival windows, meaning dengue is no longer confined to the post-monsoon months, according to medical experts. “Transmission used to be a monsoon-linked risk. That window is now widening,” one specialist noted, urging continued vigilance with standing water and mosquito control even outside the traditional rainy season.
