Bengaluru Doctors Urge Parents Not to Dismiss Children’s Persistent Stomach Pain as “School Nerves”

Dr Venugopal Reddy Iragamreddy HOD and Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist

Bengaluru, 3rd July 2026 : As the school term gets underway, Medicover Women & Children Hospital, Whitefield, is cautioning parents against brushing off persistent stomach pain in children as a routine upset or reluctance to attend class. In the past two months, the hospital has treated 26 children aged 6 to 15 for acute appendicitis.

Most children’s stomach aches settle on their own. But appendicitis needs urgent attention when the pain persists, worsens, or comes with vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, or sharp pain on the lower right side. During term time, doctors caution, such pain is often dismissed as a child not wanting to go to school — delaying diagnosis. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix can rupture within a day or two, leading to abdominal infection and a longer, harder recovery.

Caught early, appendicitis is treated with minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, and most children are back to their normal routine within days.

“Children complain of stomach pain often, and most of the time it is nothing serious,” said Dr. Venugopal Reddy, Head of Pediatrics, Medicover Women & Children Hospital, Whitefield. “The signs that need a doctor are pain that does not settle, pain on the lower right side, or pain with fever, vomiting, or refusal to eat. When we catch it early, treatment is simple and recovery is quick.”

The hospital’s pediatric team — pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, emergency physicians, anaesthetists, and intensivists — works together to diagnose and treat surgical emergencies in children.
